AUTOPOINT COMPANY
1801-31 Foster Avenue
Chicago

1930 Catalog

This catalog was in the collection of the late Dick Laymon who was associated with Autopoint for more than 50 years. This catalog could have been issued in 1929, 1930, or 1931. Autopoint advertisements show that the company moved to Foster Avenue in mid-1929, and Autopoint introduced new "non-slip" Bakelite tips for its pencils in early 1931. In the absence of evidence to the contrary, I have arbitrarily assigned 1930 as the date.
This catalog reflects evolution of the product line since the 1927 catalog.
This catalog is a 13 page pamphlet printed by American Colortype. It is 4 inches by 9 inches.

Notes

  1. The Realite pencil company which is mentioned was a precursor of the Autopoint company. As late as the beginning of World War II, Autopoint sold pencils under the "Realite" name. The Realite pencils were a less expensive line but still were excellent pencils.
  2. Numbers 1-52 are used as model numbers. Some numbers were not used in this catalog -- 3-6, 8, 10, 20-29, 41, 43, and 45-51.
  3. The main differences between this and the 1927 catalog are:
    • The Checking Autopoints, Nos. 21-28, have been dropped.
    • Dialer Autopoints, Nos. 11T, 11XT, 11CX, 11XCR and 12T, have been added.
  4. In this catalog, pencils with "ball" clips are common. Pencils with the older older flat clips are rare -- variants of No. 2 and Nos. 12X and 12T. Those clips are illustrated below. The red oversize pencil has the ball clip. The green pencil shows the older flat clip.

  5. Pencils with and without caps over the erasers are mentioned. Three types of caps are shown.
    • The "Bell Cap" is common.
    • No. 2C has a plain metal cap.
    • No. 19X has a Bakelite cap.
  6. Three different size erasers are mentioned.
    • Many pencils have regular size erasers.
    • The oversize Autopoints use an oversize eraser.
    • No. 19X uses a small eraser.
  7. The "Thin (writing)" lead is 0.046 inches in diameter. Today, that lead--which is sold now as 1.1mm lead--is considered huge, but in 1927 that was the standard lead for mechanical pencils.
  8. The "Thick (checking" lead is 0.076 inches in diameter. By the 1960s, the only pencil using the checking lead was the Model No. 10 double-ended pencil.

Index by Model Number

The basic types of pencils are:

  • Standard Autopoints having exposed erasers and moulded Bakelite barrels in Maroon, Black, Yellow, Green, Red or Blue solid colors or Maroon, Orange or Green in mottled shades.
  • Checking Autopoints are designed for use with the THICK (Checking) leads. Pencils No. 1C and No. 2C are available only with solid color barrels in Maroon, Black, Yellow, Green, Red, or Blue "to match color of lead in Barrel."
  • Regular and De Luxe Autopoints are slightly larger in diameter with Bell Caps over the erasers.
    • Regular Autopoints have moulded Bakelite Barrels in Maroon, Black, Yellow, Green, Red or Blue solid colors or Maroon, Orange or Green in mottled shades.
    • De Luxe Autopoints have Bakelite barrels in Cloudy Amber, Blue, Green Jade or Ivory or transparent Ruby, Amethyst, Rose or Saphire colors.
  • Oversize Autopoints are larger pencils. They are available in regular or de luxe models.
  • Dialer Autopoints are regular black Autopoints "with rotatable ball top ... for manipulation of automatic telephone dial."
  • Double Tip Autopoints have two writing tips. The bodys are available in Maroon, Black, Green or Blue solid colors or in two-color combinations of red and blue or red and yellow "to indicate lead color in tip." Double tip Autopoints were sold with a special "Double Tip Pencil" cartridge containing a reserve of lead and two erasers. That cartridge is shown on the page listing DOUBLE TIP Autopoints.
